The PAF grant included expectations for sustainability planning, and the Office of Populations Affairs provided sustainability planning resources and technical assistance (Asheer et al. 2017a; Warner et al. 2020, this issue; Office of Adolescent Health 2017). Third, programs connected young fathers to one another, and young fathers reported they enjoyed the opportunity to connect with other young fathers (McGirr et al. 2020, this issue). Second, social-emotional supports such as social activities and support groups were frequently mentioned by participants as reasons for remaining in a case management program (Egan et al. 2020, this issue). Program administrators reported the program champion’s recruitment via word of mouth and his or her promotion of activities/services were most successful in reaching potential PAF participants (Askelson et al. 2020, this issue). Although engagement in the Adolescent Family Life Project-Positive Youth Development case management program was relatively high, barriers included transitions in clients’ lives, transportation issues, family and school commitments, and other overwhelming life circumstances. For example, ongoing coaching and technical assistance from a male engagement expert and regular in-person or virtual peer-to-peer learning opportunities were provided to support case managers serving young fathers (McGirr et al. 2020, this issue).

In addition, state schools provide a range of student support services at the school to support pregnant and parenting students to continue their education, including guidance officers, school-based youth health nurses and youth support coordinators. Empowering Pregnant and Parenting Students: A Comprehensive Guide for School Social Workers
Given the historically low rates of teen pregnancy today, it is unclear whether the benefits of running alternative schools for pregnant students are worth the added expenditures. According to the NWLC’s study, pregnant and parenting teenagers in many schools are expelled, barred from school activities, and penalized for pregnancy-related absences. Many schools provide programs that focus on preventing teen pregnancy in the first place.
Yet few college and universities focus on the needs of those who are pregnant and parenting, which is now about one in five college students. Pregnant and parenting students have several options for continuing and completing their education. Although there are more than 3.7 million parenting students in higher education, current data about these students is based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – which many students do not complete. I want policies that reflect the value of investing in parenting students and their children.
